To achieve this Mellon has created a unique curriculum which combines actual Greek language learning with hands-on cultural experiences which help bring the lessons learnt in the classroom into vivid life. “There is nothing like reading an ancient Greek inscription in Olympia with modern Greek you have learnt in class, to make you feel like you are suddenly getting into Greek culture,” says Dimitris.
Mellon however has gone even further. Apart from the expert linguists who deliver lessons in class there are also experts in antiquities and ancient Greek history and even professional tour guides, to act as a resource. “We have a long and successful history in creating immersive learning environments for Greek students who want to learn to speak English,” explains Mr Kouniakis, “in creating the syllabus for the Greek Language Learning classes we utilised resources which normally would not be readily available outside Greece. We had a simple reasoning: We are surrounded by antiquities, ancient sites and museums. We are a university town so we used the university expertise to bring in those who best understand how culture and language developed.”
The end result is a live Language and Culture class that helps those who come to Patras to learn to speak Greek get to grips not just with Greek as a language with pronunciation and spelling but also Greek as a direct development of a very unique culture.
“Really, you cannot separate language learning from its culture, not if you really want to get the feel for it,” confirms Mr Kouniakis. “The result is a fun environment, fully interactive, captivating, inspiring and totally engaging.”
